AWAY FROM THE FRONT LINES : STILL FIGHTING

What does it mean to be a country at war?

When Americans read about countries at war what are they told? What are they shown? When you think about Ukraine what images come to mind? There are many ways we think about countries at war but it is most often sold to us as bombs, broken lives, buildings destroyed, and futures ruined. And these are true, these are real consequences of war. But there are other stories there too. Why do they fight? Why do we support those who fight? For me, war is not just the suffering. It’s about trying to see who the real people are that are still living their lives. Yes they cry, but they also laugh. Yes they mourn, but they also continue on. They support their country while also trying to better their lives. War is more than just soldiers on the front lines, it is a grandma walking her grandson. Shipping container homes for refuges. Kids playing in the snow. Memorials to the fallen. Business owners keeping their doors open and employees with jobs. Churches offering comfort. These, are photo stories of the people of Ukraine away from the front lines, but still fighting.
